16 November 2007
11 November is not only the anniversary of armistice day and the start of the carnival season in Germany but also Saint Martin's Day. The legend of Saint Martin sharing his riding cloak with a beggar is used to teach German children the value of sharing. On and around this day children in Germany make their own lanterns and go from door to door singing special St Martin songs. Normally they receive sweets as a reward for their efforts. So you could say that it's a friendly form of trick or treating. A lot of schools, kindergartens, villages and cities also organise a St Martin's parade. Some picture's of the parade organised by the Bismarckschule, Krefeld I have embedded at the end of this post. Just click on the picture to be taken to the webalbum.
